Hi, I’m Courtney from Crafts by Courtney. Today I’m sharing a simple, budget-friendly DIY vase craft that’s perfect for spring party tables or everyday decor. I picked up several glass vases at the Dollar Tree and gave them an easy makeover with decorative rope and hot glue—quick, affordable, and surprisingly stylish.
This project is ideal if you love hosting but want to keep party decor costs low. With a few inexpensive materials you can transform plain glass vases into chic, coastal-inspired or rustic centerpieces. Below I list the supplies, walk through each step, and share finishing ideas so you can customize the look for your event or home.
Supplies
- Glass vase (Dollar Tree or similar)
- Hot glue and glue gun
- Decorative rope, twine, or jute
- Scissors
Getting Started
I found a lovely rope at Michaels and knew it would be perfect for this project. Choose a rope or twine that matches your theme—natural jute for rustic or white/colored rope for a fresh spring look. Make sure the rope’s thickness suits the vase shape so it wraps evenly and lays flat.
Before you start, clean and dry the vase thoroughly so the glue adheres well. Safety tip: Work on a heat-safe surface and keep the hot glue gun away from children and pets.
Step 1 – Glue Rope to Vase
Apply a line of hot glue along the base of the vase and press the end of the rope into the glue. Hold briefly to secure. Gluing the rope at the base anchors the wrap and prevents slipping as you continue around the vase.
Step 2 – Wrap Rope Around Vase
Slowly wrap the rope around the vase, adding small dots of hot glue as you go to keep each coil snug and even. I wrapped mine about halfway up the vase, but you can cover more or less depending on the look you want. Trim the rope when you reach your desired height.
Step 3 – Glue Rope to Vase
Secure the trimmed end with a final dab of hot glue. Press the rope firmly so the finish looks neat. If any glue strings appear, you can carefully remove them once the glue cools, or use a razor blade for tiny spots.
Step 4 – Finishing Touches
Once the rope is secure, add small embellishments or accents. I attached a starfish brooch to one vase that I found locally for about $1.00—an easy way to give it a coastal flair. These vases also work beautifully with paper straws, faux or fresh flowers, and small greenery stems.
The finished look is versatile—use the vases as centerpieces, utensil holders, or decorative storage in your craft room. After the party, they’ve become practical organizers for pens, brushes, and small supplies.
These vases are ideal for adding cute paper straws, florals, or any small party accents. They’re inexpensive to make, fast to assemble, and customizable to suit any theme.
I’m really pleased with how these turned out. They’re a quick, attractive way to refresh plain Dollar Tree glassware and create a cohesive look for seasonal tables or everyday decorating.
